2018 was a historic year for the European region. Not only was it the last year before franchising, but it was also the year when the EU LCS reached awe-inspiring heights at the World Championship. With two teams in the Top 4, it was the picture-perfect ending of an era, just before a new one began.
In Riot’s own words, the EU LCS is evolving and what better way to get that message across than by going for a complete branding overhaul and a name change? Starting in 2019, the European LCS will be called the League of Legends European Championship, or LEC for short.
Furthermore, the region will be getting a complete visual upgrade. Starting with 2019, the LEC will be sending out a more youthful, energetic vibe which they can call their own. The region obtained international success over the past few years by being different, by sometimes thinking (and playing) outside of the box, so this overall identity goes nicely with the way the region has developed over the years.
Furthermore, by shifting their branding and donning a new moniker, Riot EU is differentiating the EU LCS from its NA brethren, which is a good thing. Both regions were (in a way) thought to be two sides of the same coin and were often grouped up as “The West.” By creating a unique identity, the LEC will build its own narrative coming into 2019; that can only be a positive thing for everyone involved.
The acronym is pretty questionable , but you win some you lose some. There was a fair amount of fan disappointment and online backlash, but this was likely the result of multiple shocking announcements in a row. Riot didn’t spread out the news. Instead, they released everything at once. The EU LCS becoming LEC was just the icing on the cake that no one saw coming.
Ten LEC Teams
After months of speculation and last minute change of plans, we finally know which ten teams will be competing in the franchised 2019 LEC Spring Split.
The ten teams are:

- Misfits Gaming
- Team Vitality
- Splyce
- Origen
- exceL Esports
- Rogue
- SK Gaming

This lineup means that there will be four new teams in the LEC: Origen, exceL Esports, Rogue, and SK Gaming. While Origen and SK Gaming had impactful stints in the former EU LCS, they were eventually relegated.
In the end, we have a pretty solid mix of old and new faces. We have six staple LEC teams. I think a lot of the narratives built up over the last couple of years will carry over to 2019.
The best thing about this line-up is that we will have the opportunity to watch Vitality, Splyce, Schalke, and Misfits evolve and challenge for Top 3. All these teams managed to reach greatness at one point in the past but were unable to maintain the top level of play over long periods of time.
Vitality and Schalke, in particular, were finally found success in the 2018 regular season — Schalke locally, whereas Vitality made waves on the international stage as well. With better financial backing and improved infrastructure, these ten teams will be able to prosper in the post-relegation LEC era.
